چکیده

Cosmological gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are the brightest explosions in the Universe. Satellite detectors, such as Beppo-SAX, HETE2 and more recently Swift, have provided a wealth of data, including the localization and redshifts of subsets of GRBs. The redshift distribution has been utilized in several studies in attempts to constrain the evolving star formation rate and to probe GRB rate evolution in the high-redshift Universe. These studies find that the GRB luminosity function and/or the rate density evolve with redshift. We present a short review of the problems of constraining GRB rate evolution in the context of the complex mix of biases inherent in the redshift measurements. To disentangle GRB rate evolution from the biases prevalent in the redshift distribution will require accounting for the incompleteness of the observed redshift sample. We highlight the importance of formulating a ‘complete GRB selection function’ to account for the main sources of bias.

(nasa-tm-111180) the Effects of N96-17700 Pure Density Evolution on the Brightness Distribution of Cosmological Gamma-ray Bursts

In this work, we explore the effects of burst rate density evolution on the observed brightness distribution of cosmological gamma-ray bursts. Although the brightness distribution of gamma-ray bursts observed by the BATSE experiment has been shown to be consistent with a nonevolving source population observed to redshifts of order unity, evolution of some form is likely to be present in the gam...

The Cosmological Signatures and Flux Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts with a Broad Luminosity Distribution

The cosmological expansion cannot produce the reported correlations of the gamma-ray burst timescale and spectral energy with peak flux if the burst model reproduces the BATSE 3B peak-flux distribution for a non-evolving burst source density. The required ratios of time dilation and redshift factors are only produced by monoluminous models at peak fluxes below the BATSE threshold, and they are ...

Cosmological parametrization of gamma ray burst intensity distribution

Using three parametrizations of the gamma ray burst count data comparison is made to cosmological source models. While simple models can fit 〈V/Vmax〉 and faint end slope constraints, the addition of a logarithmic count range variable describing the curvature of the counts shows that models with no evolution or evolution power law in redshift with index less than 10 fail to satisfy simultaneousl...

GRB 050904 : A very high redshift gamma ray burst

We report near simultaneous multi-color (RIY JHK) observations made with the MAGNUM 2m telescope of the gamma ray burst GRB 050904 detected by the SWIFT satellite. The spectral energy distribution shows a very large break between the I and J bands. Using intergalactic transmissions measured from high redshift quasars we show that the observations place a 95% confidence lower limit of z = 6.18 o...
